Dear SSFUSD Community,
The impact of COVID-19 has presented a tremendous, challenging, and rapidly evolving global crisis. In light of the current situation, we extend our appreciation to our entire community as you have persevered and continued to support the well-being of our students, staff, and families. We acknowledge and applaud your efforts and willingness to assist and help as best you can, as each of you have been an integral part of this community.
As we reported last week, a decision was made by a collective of seven Bay Area county health officials to extend school closures and student dismissals from regular school attendance through May 1, 2020. This is being done to slow the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible. We remain focused on the safety and wellness of our students, staff, and community which continue to be our highest priorities.
Please be aware of the following additional updates, which we hope will aid in your planning and preparation:
School and District Hours
In an effort to provide access and support to our students, families, and staff, SSFUSD has adopted a new limited schedule to accommodate essential services:
Beginning March 31, 2020, all school campuses will open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
- Staff will be available to provide support and information to students, parents and staff for things such as student enrollments/registrations and transfer requests; collecting student work/assignments; additional instructional materials/assignments, and other parent inquiries or needs.
- Staff will have access to classrooms for the purpose of instructional planning, gathering necessary materials, and other preparations needed to facilitate at-home distributive learning (distance learning).
- Students and parents may only visit school offices as needed and are not permitted to visit classrooms unless individual arrangements are made with a student’s teacher and the consent of school administration.
- In compliance with the current state and local shelter-in-place orders, and as schools are considered to be essential, staff will report to work as needed and arranged by administration. Administrators may rotate staff to maintain social distancing based on the needs of each site and department, so visitors may not see the same staff in our offices on a regular basis.
- All schools and the district office will be thoroughly disinfected/sanitized at the end of each open day (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and the next day (Wednesday and Friday).
- School and district offices will be closed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until further notice.
- Please note that all visitors and staff are expected to follow social distancing and healthy hygiene practices at all times.
Communication Expectations and At-Home Learning
While SSFUSD has been working diligently to develop common communication practices between our schools and families, each of our schools has unique relationships with their local communities. Therefore, each school may utilize varying online platforms, and teachers may utilize different instructional delivery methods that are aligned to their unique skill sets and abilities. As we continue to support at-home distributive learning throughout the district, some staff may correspond with students via email and/or SchoolLoop, while others may participate in Zoom/Google conference calls or other electronic media.
Though there may be a variation in how educators communicate with you, we do expect that there will be ongoing regularly scheduled correspondence. We are working on designating a certain amount of time for educators to communicate with parents and students; more information will be forthcoming later this week. If you are not hearing from your child's teacher(s), please notify your school office during Tuesday and Thursday operating hours.
We will also strive to send district communications to you on a weekly basis, depending upon feasibility and whether we may have new and/or pertinent information to share.
At-Home Learning Update
Students may receive varying forms and levels of assigned work. Our educators have provided packets of independent learning materials, reading assignments, online lessons and discussions, and other materials using technology and/or combinations of these examples.
We recognize that the amount of work sent home may possibly exceed the time or resources you have available to support your children. Please do your best and know that we will be flexible in how we assess student learning and enrichment.
While we continue to utilize at-home distributive learning, SSFUSD will not emphasize the introduction of new concepts, skills or standards. Teachers will focus on enhancing students’ abilities and refining their understanding of key concepts/skills that will prepare them for the next grade or course.
Graduation, Promotion, and Grades
We know many of you may be concerned about grading implications and graduation requirements. While we don't have definitive answers yet, we are awaiting additional guidance from the CA Department of Education, San Mateo County Office of Education, and the higher education community. We are committed to supporting our students and will continue to keep their best interest at the center of our conversations. We will be sure to share any additional information/updates with you.
With regard to graduation and promotion ceremonies, we are considering different options for our students and families. We will make the best decisions we can with the information and guidance we receive, while ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff.
Technology Update
Thank you to all who have participated in our technology survey. We are using it to assist us in determining how and to whom to lend technology devices. Please click here, if you haven't taken the survey and still need to. Staff members will also place calls in the coming days to determine who may require assistance in completing the survey. If you do not have internet access, please call your school administrator and let them know, so they can collect your responses.
Meal Distribution
South San Francisco Unified School District will begin daily meal distribution again, starting the week of Monday, March 30. Families will receive one breakfast and one lunch per child. Meal distribution hours are 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the following locations:
- Spruce Elementary school
- Westborough Middle School
- El Camino High School
Meals will be served on a first come, first serve basis. Children must accompany their parents when they pick up meals.

El impacto del coronavirus (COVID-19) ha creado una crisis global. Queremos agradecer a toda nuestra comunidad para su perseverancia y apoyo. Reconocemos y aplaudimos sus esfuerzos para proteger el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes, empleos y familias.
Como le informamos la semana pasada, siete oficiales de salud del Área de la Bahía decidieron extender el cierre de escuelas hasta el 1 de mayo de 2020 para reducir la propagación de COVID-19.

Horario escolar del distrito
El Distrito Escolar Unificado del South San Francisco (SSFUSD) tiene un nuevo horario para servicios esenciales:
Empezando el 31 de marzo de 2020, todos las escuelas abrirán los martes y los jueves desde 9:00 a.m. hasta 2:00 p.m. cada semana.
- Los empleos escolares estarán disponible para dar información a los estudiantes, padres y otros empleos perteneciendo a cosas como inscripciones de estudiantes y aplicaciones de transferencia; colección de tareas o otros materiales de instrucción y otras necesidades.

Aprendizaje a distancia

Si la cantidad de tareas excede el tiempo o los recursos disponibles a sus niños, por favor haga lo mejor que pueda. Somos flexibles en cómo evaluamos el aprendizaje de los estudiantes.
Mientras SSFUSD está utilizando el aprendizaje a distancia, no presentarémos nuevos conceptos o estándares. Los maestros concentrarán en mejorar las habilidades existentes de los estudiantes y su comprensión de conceptos importantes que los prepararán para el próximo año.
Graduación, Promoción y Grados
Sabemos que muchos padres están preocupados sobre los requisitos de graduación y promoción. Ahora mismo no tenemos respuestas definitivas. Servicios de tecnología
Gracias a todos que han llenado nuestra encuesta tecnológica. Estámos utilizandola para determinar cualquier familia tiene o no tiene aparatos tecnológicos. Presione aquí, si no ha llenado la encuesta. Nuestros empleos también hagarán llamadas de teléfono en los próximos días para determinar quién necesita ayuda para completar la encuesta. Distribución de comidas
Comenzando el 30 de marzo, SSFUSD empezará la distribución diaria de comidas otra vez. Las familias recibirán un desayuno y un almuerzo por niño. El horario de distribución empieza a las 11:00 AM hasta la 1:00 PM en los siguientes lugares:
- Escuela primaria de Spruce
- Escuela Westborough
- Escuela secundaria de El Camino
Las comidas se servirán por orden de llegada. Los niños tienen que acompañar a sus padres cuando recogen las comidas.
