Dear SSFUSD Families,
I am writing to thank you for stepping in to help supplement the teaching and learning of your children while balancing family and work obligations during this time. I recognize the tremendous challenges that you have taken on to support your children’s learning. Many of you are working from home, while others are still going to your job sites to provide essential services. This is not an easy task.
While your child’s academic needs are a prime concern of our school district, so too are their social, emotional, and mental health needs. The COVID-19 situation has had an unnerving impact on our students’ sense of routine and helping them to adjust to this new existence is just as important as keeping up with their studies.
As a parent, if you are struggling and feel like you are failing in these efforts, please do not hesitate to ask for help. Our community is a family, and we are here to assist you. We have mental health and guidance counselors on staff, and we have contacts with the City of South San Francisco and the County of San Mateo that can connect your family with many important resources.
For example, did you know that the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has mandated that no family’s utilities will be shut off for non-payment during the COVID-19 pandemic? Banks and other lenders are also providing a three-month suspension of payments on credit card and mortgage payments. Additionally, if you are eligible to receive a stimulus payment from the federal government, you can find out when you will receive it by visiting this website:

As for our school district, we are trying our best to support our families by supplying breakfast and lunch at no cost to all children under 18. Families who lack internet access and a dedicated computer for at-home learning may also request a cellular hotspot and laptop computer from our technology services department for home use as long as California’s shelter in place order remains in effect. Please follow up with your child's site administrator should you have technology needs, so they can inform our technology services department.
Please take advantage of these resources and let us know how we can help you. In the meantime, remember to take it one hour/day at a time and tell yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes.
In that same vein, please remember that we serve a diverse community of students, but we also have a diverse staff. Each of our teachers has unique talents and skill sets, and they demonstrate them differently but in equally wonderful ways. While there remains a need for us to continue working to align our processes, expectations, and structures within and across grade levels, our educators are working hard to keep your students engaged. Please be patient and continue to support their efforts. They are doing their very best, and I know they would love hearing some positive feedback and affirmation from you!
