According to a recent survey delivered to parents and teachers of South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD), 62% of parents whose preferred language is English favored continuing distance learning when schools reopen in the fall of 2020.
Only about 38% of these respondents wanted to return to in-person, classroom instruction.
A total of 1,450 parents whose preferred language is English responded to the survey.
Of that number, about 58% had concerns about sending their children back to school in the fall.
In fact, around 13% said they would not allow their children to return to school until a vaccine was available.
Conversely, almost 70% of parents whose preferred language was Spanish preferred to return to in-person, classroom instruction in the fall.
Only about 31% wanted to continue with distance learning.
However, around 46% of Spanish-speaking parents also expressed concerns about their children returning to school in the fall.

A total of 96 parents whose preferred language is Spanish responded to the survey.
Meanwhile, about 57% of SSFUSD certificated and classified employees also preferred to continue distance learning in the fall.
Almost 43% wanted to return to in-person, classroom instruction.
A total of 457 certificated and classified employees responded to the survey.
“We are in the process of creating a task force to help us develop recommendations for reopening SSFUSD,” said Superintendent Dr. Shawnterra Moore. “We will definitely be taking the survey results into account.”
