Dear SSFUSD Community,
As the new year approaches, and families start making plans to return to school, I want to take this opportunity to remind you that we must continue to be vigilant against COVID-19, particularly with regard to the Omicron variant, which appears to be settling in across the Bay Area. Although cases across the nation are rising, many people in the Bay Area are fully vaccinated and boosted, which has fortunately helped to curtail severe illness, even in instances of breakthrough infections.
Meanwhile, we recently learned that the State of California is committed to keeping students in school, and SSFUSD is working with the county and the state to provide COVID-19 tests that all students can take at home before returning for the new school year. We are hoping to distribute these tests to our families at a designated location on January 3, 2022. We have not yet received the test kits to date, but we are looking forward to sharing more information with you soon.
Families who cannot take advantage of this opportunity for mass testing are highly encouraged to get all family members including children under 12 tested before bringing them back to school. This is especially important, if you have traveled or attended social gatherings with unvaccinated individuals, or if you were recently exposed to anyone who may have been sick or tested positive for COVID-19.
In fact, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has organized a free testing clinic that will take place from 8:30 to 4:30 from December 30 to January 3 at 841 San Bruno Avenue, suite 100. Call 415-300-4436 to make an appointment.
As always, multiple pathways are available through your health care provider, through CVS and Rite Aid pharmacies, the state’s My Turn effort, and the San Mateo County Health Department.
We are doing our utmost to protect the health and well-being of our community, which is why we will continue to observe the health and safety protocols we put in place in August. This includes mandatory indoor masking, weekly group testing of students, and the use of air purifiers and our ultraviolet disinfecting machines. We are also encouraging our schools to conduct meetings virtually, limit gatherings, and limit the number of volunteers on campus.
Finally, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently reduced the number of quarantine days for individuals infected with COVID-19 from 10 day to 5 days. The CDPH is likely to adopt that guidance for STUDENTS ONLY, but our district will continue to observe the existing rule requiring a 10-day quarantine for all others, until the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/Osha) updates their guidelines.
