Dear SSFUSD Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I begin our final communication on a sad note. Yesterday yet another senseless act of violence occurred at an elementary school in Texas. Currently, we know that 19 innocent children and two innocent adults lost their lives due to gun violence. Together, we join in mourning the students and staff who lost their lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
As parents and educators, we struggle to help our children and students understand how such tragedies can happen at a school, which should be a haven of safety. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we continue to have conversations with our children to assist them in processing yet another national tragedy. As we transition into the summer, please take the time to talk with your children and help them process any feelings they may have about this tragedy. Following are some resources from the San Mateo County Health Department and the National Association of School Psychologists to help you navigate these conversations.
Please also know that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. As a district in alignment with our neighboring San Mateo County public agencies, we follow Big Five Emergency protocols. The Big Five is a set of immediate action responses intended to be implemented quickly in a variety of emergency situations. Our schools conduct drills regularly, and we continue to endeavor to improve our emergency preparedness with a proactive mindset. Please know we will revisit these steps with our students and staff and will be sure that everyone in our schools knows what to do when an emergency occurs.
It is hard to believe that we have made it through another eventful and stressful year, but we have. As we bring the 2021-22 school year to a close, I want to reflect back on the many ways in which we have proactively responded and pivoted to different health and safety requirements throughout the year. Although we experienced some turbulence, I remain eternally grateful and so proud of how we navigated the challenges confronting us and the achievements we were able to accomplish. I am in awe of our staff, students, parents, and families!
As you know, our district has been operating under the shadow of COVID-19 since March 2020. The class of 2020 didn’t get to have an in-person graduation that year, and while the class of 2021 did receive their diplomas in-person last year, our middle schoolers and high schoolers were never really able to set foot on campus until graduation. However, as we transitioned back this year, we were able to continue some of the great traditions we had pre-COVID, which meant so much to our students and staff!
This year we fully reopened, and it was exciting to have all our students on campus again. We also saw the return of many of our most cherished traditions: musical concerts, theatrical performances, dance recitals, the Helix Cup competition, and many other events. I am so happy and so grateful we were able to celebrate these traditions as we have in the past.
As we prepare to say goodbye to the class of 2022, and our other students prepare to take another step forward, I want everyone to celebrate this moment. It is a new beginning. We learned how to deliver instruction during a pandemic. We learned how to support our families and students in their time of need. We learned how to keep each other safe and how to find stillness and calm during moments of uncertainty. While COVID-19 is still with us, we have learned how to live with it now, which is more than we knew 26 months ago.
Thank you for your perseverance and your patience! Thank you for your determination and empathy! Thank you for being such an integral and important part of SSFUSD!

Comienzo nuestra comunicación final en una nota triste. Ayer otro acto de violencia ocurrió en una escuela primaria en Tejas. Nos unimos en duelo a los estudiantes y empleados que perdieron sus vidas en la Escuela Primaria Robb en Uvalde, Tejas.
Como padres y educadores, luchamos para ayudar a nuestros niños y estudiantes a entender cómo tales tragedias pueden ocurrir en una escuela, que debe ser un refugio de seguridad. Ahora más que nunca, es imperativo que sigamos hablando con nuestros niños para ayudarles a procesar otra tragedia nacional. Con la aproximación del verano, por favor tómese el tiempo para hablar con sus hijos y ayudarles a procesar cualquier sentimiento que puedan tener sobre esta tragedia. A continuación hay algunos recursos del Departamento de Salud del Condado de San Mateo y la Asociación Nacional de Psicólogos Escolares para ayudarle con estas conversaciones.

Es difícil creer que lo hemos hecho a través de otro año lleno de eventos y estresante, pero lo hemos hecho. Mientras nos preparamos para despedir a la clase de 2022, y nuestros otros estudiantes se preparan para tomar otro paso adelante, quiero que todos celebren este momento. Es una nueva empieza. Aprendimos a impartir instrucción durante una pandemia. Aprendimos a apoyar a nuestras familias y estudiantes en su tiempo de necesidad. Aprendimos a mantenernos unos a otros seguros y a encontrar quietud y calma durante momentos de incertidumbre. Aunque COVID-19 todavía está con nosotros, hemos aprendido a vivir con él ahora, que es más de lo que sabíamos hace 26 meses.
