How Yoga Came to Be at Monte Verde Elementary

Breathe for Change

Monte Verde Elementary third grade teacher Monyca Currier won a $2,500 grant in February to help her learn how to teach yoga to children and adults as a way to increase social-emotional wellness at her school.

Currier was among 200 teachers who submitted proposals in January to State Farm’s® Teacher Assist program, which was set up to support new approaches to instruction during COVID-19.

“I've seen the impact moods and self-confidence have on children, and I've seen how kids can spiral downwards when faced with stress,” said Currier. “I strongly believe in the idea that without a healthy mind and attitude, it is extremely difficult for people to learn. I was beyond thrilled to find out that I was one of the chosen winners.”

The grant allows Currier to enroll in virtual classes through Breathe for Change, where she will learn how to facilitate social-emotional learning and wellness activities.

“Many of our families have been affected traumatically by COVID-19, and the repercussions won't go away overnight,” said Currier. “Students need to learn coping skills to deal with not only the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, but also coping skills for everyday life.”

She said she hopes to share her newfound knowledge both at school and beyond.

“I would certainly be excited to branch out further and offer classes to my co-workers or to help them with their own students within the district,” said Currier. “I can only see positivity coming from this opportunity!”
