For the first time since 2019, students were able to browse and purchase books at school again.

“The students were really excited,” said Spruce Elementary Principal Angela Garduno. “It’s always nice to be able to celebrate reading.”

Garduno said a portion of the proceeds from the book fair help to fund things like field trips and other school activities.

“Our staff and volunteers did a great job organizing the book fair,” she said. “Scholastic provides us with the books, a cash register, and display cases, but we as a school have to set everything up and run it.”

In addition to the book fair, Spruce Elementary helps promote literacy by inviting school employees to visit classrooms to read to students.

“We’re bringing our staff whom the children don’t always get to see to the forefront,” Garduno said, “people like our noon duty supervisors and other employees.”

The school will also encourage students to read a different book each week and has scheduled a virtual visit by Carrie Finnison, author Dozens of Doughnuts, on March 9.

Then beginning March 21, the South San Francisco Public Library’s bookmobile, Learning Wheels, will show up at Spruce Elementary every Tuesday at 1:15 PM until the end of the school year.

Learning Wheels helps promote literacy in northern San Mateo County by providing free books to families and children in Colma, Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco.
