Inter-District Transfers

Request a school outside of SSFUSD

All families requesting to attend school in another district must fill out an Inter-District Transfer Permit annually.

Transfer permits are available online for the following school year beginning in January, each year. Please check with your desired school district for deadlines or additional forms needed. Allow

Step 1: Parent or Guardian fills out the Inter-District Transfer Permit (IDT) located below for the desired school year, attaches required documents (if any), and submits electronically to SSFUSD.
    • Parents who work in the requested district area must attach verification of employment (recent paystub with relevant work address, letter from employer, or current school employee ID badge are all accepted).
    • Attach most recent individualized education program (IEP), if student is receiving special education or speech therapy services.
    • To request multiple schools within the same district, please attach a personal note or letter with your preferences.

Step 2: SSFUSD will review IDT request and if approved, send the IDT and all attachments to the district of the requested school. Allow up to 2 weeks for processing and approval. A signed and approved permit/release from SSFUSD does not guarantee transfer approval by another district.

Step 3: The requested district reviews the IDT and makes a decision based on available space and their own district's policies. The parent is notified of the decision by the district requested according to that district's policy and timelines.

SSFUSD recommends that new students enroll in their school of residence while waiting for IDT decision(s). Please see instructions for New Student Registration.

Please choose the application for the correct school year.
Applications for the 2025-26 school year will be available here beginning January 6, 2025.

Applications for the 2024-25 school year are available through May, 2025 - please refer to your requested district's requirements and filing period deadlines:

Transfer into SSFUSD

New Inter-District Transfer (IDT) requests for the following school year are accepted until February 28th

Step 1: Complete an Inter-District Transfer Permit or Release with your district of residence (even if your student has never attended school in your district).
    • If the reason for request  is employment, proof of employment within SSFUSD boundaries must also be included.
    • If your student is receiving Special Education and/or Speech Language Services, please attach the most the most recent IEP.

Step 2: The district of residence then decides whether to approve or deny the transfer. If the request is is approved, your district will send the Inter-District Transfer Permit to SSFUSD directly. Approved release agreement from the school district of residence does not guarantee or imply transfer approval by SSFUSD, which is not responsible for misinformation disseminated by other districts.

Step 3: SSFUSD reviews the request and makes a decision based on available space and for continuing student, appropriate grades, attendance and discipline. IDTs are processed beginning April 1st. The Office of Student Services will notify applicants of their decision by mail within 30 days.

Step 4: Approved families follow the instructions on the New Student Registration page, with the transfer approval letter substituting for verification of residence.

NOTES:
    • Once enrolled, students must renew annually by February 28. Families approved for reasons of employment (Allen Bill) will provide an annual update of verification of employment instead.
    • Transfer can be revoked for disciplinary issues, excessive absences or tardies, or failing grades.
    • Currently enrolled 11th and 12th graders, in good standing, are eligible for approval of their inter-district transfer.
    • SSFUSD recommends that new students enroll in their district of residence while waiting for an IDT decision.

SSFUSD is no longer accepting new Inter-District Transfer requests for the 2024-25 school year.
Students currently attending an SSFUSD school who move to another district must complete an Inter-District Transfer Permit within 30 days.
